Hogwash is actually a real thing

Turns out “hogwash” actually means a slurry of kitchen waste and scraps used to feed hogs. “Pigwash”, similarly. Since I’d always just encountered this as a word meaning “baloney” or “horsefeathers” I never stopped to think about what it actually is; but here in Vietnam my wife’s organization funds a lot of microcredit loans for HIV+ mothers, and a lot of them use the credit to buy and raise pigs, leading to a need for…pigwash. Who knew?
No news yet on whether horses actually have feathers.
