Apology for a weird coincidence by mattsteinglass

A couple of years ago I was thinking about writing a novel about an economist who comes to a Southeast Asian country, gradually realizes that the IMF Washington-consensus dogma he’s been peddling is a load of crap, falls in love with an impetuous young iconoclastic muckraking journalist, leaves his wife, and ends up in the streets at an anti-globalization protest screaming his lungs off. Maybe it was more like a cheesy Hollywood rabble-rouser than a novel — not quite clear. Anyway, what I remember thinking was, “It’s too bad I’m not here in Vietnam during some kind of really major economic collapse to get the background for a novel like this — maybe a currency crisis, like in ’97. Oh well.”

Be careful what you wish for! Dusting off the novel premise as we speak.
