Kevin Drum runs a contribution by a fellow named Stuart Staniford who’s done a scattergram that in the developing PMA lobbying scandal, where the lobbying firm apparently traded campaign contributions for defense contracting earmarks, Democratic congressmen seem to have gotten high payouts tied to the value of the earmark, while Republicans did it for a small flat fee. This is not terribly surprising: it costs more to get somebody to do something that violates their principles or damages their brand than to get them to do something they believe in and that enhances their brand. For comparison, think how big a campaign contribution a Republican congressman would demand to insert an earmark for a family planning clinic that performs abortions in his district.
