No doubt I won’t be the only person to remind Andrew Sullivan that when he writes

No civilized country sustained slavery as recently as America

…he’s either insulting or forgetting about Brazil, where slavery was abolished in 1888. I’ll assume he’s just forgetting.

On the broader thrust of the argument, I don’t really agree either that America, the land of political correctness, is refreshingly open in its bigotry — I find this much more true of Europe, actually — nor that being refreshingly open in your bigotry is a good thing.
