Irritating line in the AP’s account of the life and death of Jiverly Wong, who shot 13 people at an immigration center in Binghamton, NY yesterday:

Wong, who used the alias Jiverly Voong, believed people close to him were making fun of him for his poor English language skills, the chief said.

“Alias” makes it sound like he was some kind of a bank robber. His last name was clearly Vuong. His parents evidently Americanized it as Wong. One would imagine they still pronounced it in the Vietnamese fashion at home. If you wanted Americans to pronounce the Vietnamese name correctly, the closest phonetic spelling you’d use would be Voong.
