What would happen if we cut defense spending by 80%? by mattsteinglass

I’ve never seen anyone do a coherent evidence-based analysis of this question. Here’s one thing that wouldn’t happen: the United States would not be invaded by a foreign power.

So what are we getting for $600 billion a year that we couldn’t get for $100 billion? Somebody give me some evidence.

What we’d lose is our ability to project power overseas and keep the world more peaceful.

There’s also the social-animal aspect of having the biggest genitals in the yard…

As a libertarian, however, I don’t think we’re good at that job, and it costs far more than we get back. And I don’t really care about how our big tanks impress the foreigners.

Well, I had to sign up after reading this post.

We would be able to spend 100’s of billions of dollars on creating a clean-energy economy and be able to pay for the current health bill.

With regards to the post above, it’s about time the rest of the world starts investing in its own security instead of off-loading most of the responsibility to the USA.

First off our military does not keep peace in the world, there is absolutely no evidence to support that claim. The U.S. military is responsible for much of the damage around the world and has been since WWII.

What the military does is prevent countries from becoming peaceful democracies and forces them instead to be run by tyrannical leaders controlled by the U.S. in order to allow foreign corporations to step in and privatize anything and everything.

The only foreigners impressed by our tanks are the ones who are profiting from the destruction suppression, and domination of others.

Now if we cut defense spending by 80% it is possible that we might not be able to maintain this control. Then, eventually pockets of freedom would start popping up all over the world and begin to spread like a virus. The U.S. and foreign banks and corporations would begin to lose their global control.

At that point the investors who profit from pain would have to find some other superpower to begin dominating these freedom pockets.

But maybe if we took $500 billion and started feeding all of these people that we are currently dropping bombs on, we might be able to reverse the whole trend, maybe?

Well it’s a wishful thought.

“I had a vision of way we could have no enemies again, if you’re interested in this. Anybody interested in hearing this? It’s kind of an interesting theory, and all we have to do is make one decisive act and we can rid the world of all our enemies at once. Here’s what we do.
You know all that money we spend on nuclear weapons and defense every year? Trillions of dollars. Instead, if we spent all that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded… not one… we could as one race explore outer space together in peace, for ever.” Bill Hicks
