I have a piece in this Sunday’s New York Times Book Review on reading Tim O’Brien in Hanoi. You can read it here.

I had the good fortune to meet with Bao Ninh in Hanoi last month and during a Q&A session I asked him the question, If he had read any US Vietnam War fiction he responed that he did not speak English and the books were not available in Vietnamese. I was surprised and your NYT article gives a bit more background regarding the intetest and availablity of US war fiction. But I also think that the preference you report of the VN community to chronoligical and factual war stories, may evolve as has the recent art scene which has moved from the representational to the more abstract.
